Coconut - Young Shaved

Country of Origin - Southeast Asia
Average Weight - 1 KG

Introduction

The Young Shaved Coconut is a uniquely-shaped coconut fruit with an almost white shell. The reason it's called a 'young' coconut is because the fruit is harvested from the tree before it matures, unlike other coconuts which are harvested after they have fallen from the tree naturally. Young Shaved Coconuts contain lots of water, and have a more soft, jelly-like texture than other coconuts.

History

Historical evidence suggests that coconut trees originated in India. It is believed that Austronesian sailors introduced coconut in Madagascar and the Americas. Persian and Arab traders were later introduced to coconuts throughout Africa and the Middle East.

"Buko" is the word for "Young Coconut" in the Philippines. They use Young Shaved Coconuts to make 'buko juice', which is essentially made by grating the coconut meat and soaking it in the coconut water.

Regions

The Young Shaved Coconut's specific origin is unknown, but it's known to have been cultivated in Southeast Asia. This includes regions like the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and India.

Flavours & Texture

Young Shaved Coconuts are wonderfully delicious and refreshing. The coconut water has a sweet, nutty flavour, and is slightly thick. It's packed with electrolytes making it super refreshing and hydrating. The meat of a Young Shaved Coconut has a soft, creamy, jelly-like texture and a rich coconut taste.

Preparation

Young Shaved Coconuts should be stored in the fridge. You can drink the coconut water using a straw and then spoon out the coconut meat to eat raw. Alternatively, Young Shaved Coconuts are popularly used for making desserts, such as ice cream, sorbet, or cake frosting.

Nutritional Value

Young Shaved Coconuts are an excellent source of essential minerals and nutrients, including calcium and fibre. They are also full of electrolyte-rich coconut water, making them amazing for hydration.
